The country estate of Jan van Schaffelaar, owned by the 'Gelders Landgoed' is situated in Barneveld.
Some ten years ago the 'Gelders Landgoed' renovated the estate and I received the assignment to design a new garden statue representing Hercules fighting the seven-headed dragon, Hercules’ tenth work by order of King Eurystheus.
It was known that a statue representing that scene had been there before, because fragments of it were present.
The old statue had been made out of sandstone, the new one is made out of bronze, which is less sensitive to damage as a branch might fall on it, occasionally.
The goal was to make a dynamic and dramatic statue, elements that often make a baroque statue so exciting. It is said to have come out well.
